Our Profile
In 1962, the Health Departments of South Bend, Mishawaka, and St. Joseph County merged to form one Health Department under the title "St. Joseph County Health Department". During those early years the department consisted of 1 part-time health officer, 10 to 15 nurses, and 3 to 5 public health specialists.
Today the department consists of approximately 60 employees.
Health Officer: Roland W. Chamblee, Sr. M.D.
Dr. Chamblee graduated from medical school at Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee. He came to South Bend and did his internship at Saint Joseph’s Hospital. Dr. Chamblee has been a practitioner in the area since that time at the various hospitals. Dr. Chamblee served as a part time Medical Director at St. Joseph Chapin Street Health Care Clinic. He did a year program as Physician in Charge of a hospital in Uganda, East Africa. Presently Dr. Chamblee is the Advisor to the Department of Diversity, and Manager of the Medical Outpatient-Outreach Services. Dr. Chamblee has been a member of various boards and committees in the area. With Dr. Chamblee’s background and experience the board feels that he will be an asset to the department as a spokesperson and advocate for health in St. Joseph County.
Administrator: Nick Molchan
Mr. Molchan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Notre Dame. He started as an environmentalist at Marshall County Health Department in 1986 and became a Registered Environmental Health Specialist in 1988. Mr. Molchan took over a Marshall County Health Department Administrator / Chief Environmentalist in 1990. He graduated in December 1991 with a Masters on Public Affairs from Indiana University, South Bend. He had been a member of the Indiana Environmental Health Association Since 1987 and the National Environmental Health Association since 1991.
